Despite opinions to the contrary, all propane gas is not the same. Commercial grade propane, which accounts for a significant portion of the propane gas distributed in our area, is low in overall purity as compared to the higher grade specification HD-5. What makes the HD-5 grade unique is that it is guaranteed to have a purity rating of at least 95%. This premium fuel specification was developed by the industry in order to stress the high purity rating recommended for use in internal combustion engines such as those powering lift trucks. The letters HD stand for heavy duty, and the number 5 represents the maximum percent of propylene allowed by the specification. This has been described as 1c; the most restrictive motor fuel specification--- designed to insure a high quality, non- contaminated, high octane LP gas motor fuel. The purity of the HD-5 grade motor fuel adds longevity and efficiency to forklift engines by eliminating most of the carburetor, regulator, and starting difficulties inherent with the use of commercial grade propane which has a much higher propylene content. Propylene, the main impurity found in commercial grade propane, is the black, oily-like substance which mechanics often find, much to their dismay, clogging and fouling propane fuel systems. Unlike most other suppliers who supply commercial grade propane gas for residential applications for which HD-5 motor fuel is not required, Propane Power Corporation has the distinction of being able to supply and authenticate an HD-5 or better motor fuel on a continuous and daily basis. In accordance with long-term contracts with primary refinery supply sources, all deliveries to Propane Power Corporation's Newark, New Jersey terminal for distribution to customers is guaranteed to be HD-5 specification fuel. Aside from monitoring the purity of the fuel going into cylinders, Propane Power Corporation is equally concerned with assuring that all safety aspects of delivering this product are treated with paramount importance. Specifically, the company uses only the lighter weight and more durable aluminum cylinders versus the older, heavier, and more dangerous steel cylinders. Propane Power Corporation furnishes its customers with 33-1/2 lb. aluminum forklift cylinders (8 gallons), which are 40 percent lighter than the steel counterpart. Furthermore, the aluminum cylinder surpasses all burst-strength specifications mandated by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) and is universally regarded within the industry as the safest cylinder for propane use. |
